Summer Learning In the Time of COVID-19

It’s no secret that the COVID-19 pandemic has changed when and how students learn. It has also shined a light on the importance of out of school time and, particularly, summer learning. The COVID-19 pandemic has widened the existing opportunity gap between children from low-income families and those with greater wealth. This pandemic has also widened the opportunity gap for children in rural communities versus those in more populated cities.

That is precisely why summer learning is more important than ever. As long-time advocates for the out-of-school time field, we know the last ring of the school bell does not mean learning stops. It merely signals a change in “location” -- a different building, field, gym, or studio or online where apps, tools and content are abundant. This summer, our learning programs are stepping up like never before. Across Arkansas, providers are adapting and innovating to ensure children and their families can access quality summer learning opportunities and critical supports and services throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

The list contains information on events and activities from across the state, or to at least provide websites that might be helpful in terms of looking for free and inexpensive activities throughout the summer.

The Summer Camp Guide within the resource list is intended to be a useful tool f to help parents find summer camps that they might be interested in their children attending. The camps range from different locations across the state and include recreational, music and art camps as well as faith-based camps. Please note that it is not an all-inclusive list, but it does provide a resource list from a variety of sources to highlight what our state has to offer in terms of opportunities for children and families. The Arkansas Out of School Network is neither endorsing any of the listed programs nor intentionally leaving any programs off of the list. If you know of other programs not listed here, please let us know! Email Kristin Koenigsfest at kkoenigsfest@astate.edu .
